Circuit Workouts Are Not Always the Answer

Mixing strength training with cardio is one of the best ways to maximize your workouts, but circuit workouts are not always the way to go. Sometimes we need (or want) to just lift weights. On other days straight cardio workouts are called for. It’s kind of like peanut butter and chocolate for me. I love them both. But some days I want one or the other, while other days I want them together, as in Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. It’s the same for cardio and strength training. Separate. Together. Both are good. Mix them up.

Many people do the same exact workout day in and day out, then wonder why their bodies stop changing. You must constantly confuse your body, thus forcing it to adapt. The changes can be simple. Treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, it doesn’t matter. You can take these four essential formats and work them into your program to stay mentally stimulated and keep your results coming.

Stretch in between sets.

Most of us hate to stretch, especially at the end of a workout. You just want the workout to be over; the last thing you want to do is spend another ten minutes or so stretching. Though you should still stretch out at the end of your exercise sessions, you can also occasionally stretch within a workout itself. What I like to do during some strength workouts is stretch between each set.

You want to take thirty seconds or so rest between each set anyway, right? So why not kill two birds with one stone and spend that time stretching the muscle you just worked? For example, you would do one set in the extension machine, then get out and pull up on a foot, stretching each quadriceps for fifteen to thirty seconds. Get back into the leg extension machine, do another set, then get out and stretch again. By stretching the muscle you just worked after each set, you will improve your flexibility as well as maximize your time in the gym.

And since a pound equals 3,500 calories, you need to significantly increase this expenditure in order to lose weight. Studies show that neither yoga nor Pilates raises your heart rate enough to burn this amount of calories. That’s a fact. Don’t shoot the messenger.
