What’s the Difference Between CBD and CBN?

In recent years, scientists have begun studying the cannabis plant a lot more than they did in the past. The research so far has shown that the plant can have a wide range of effects besides its well-known psychoactive ones, and scientists have been trying to isolate the compounds that cause them.

Cannabis plants contain over 100 different natural chemicals known as cannabinoids. The most widely known of these is probably THC, since it is the main psychoactive component of the plant. CBD and CBN are also both cannabinoids, but they are not psychoactive. As such, it is legal in many places to extract them from the plant, and today they can be found in many different products and forms.

The same receptors in your body interact with both of these, but they don’t share the same effects. This quick guide will introduce the differences and principal uses of CBD and CBN.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD is the most popular and widely researched of the two chemicals. It can be found in an enormous array of products, including gummies, pills, patches, oils, and even shampoo and beauty products.

Although it has been more widely studied than CBN, its medical benefits are often overstated when compared to the strength of the evidence supporting them. However, it does appear to be a promising anti-seizure medicine. It is also being investigated as a potential treatment for Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, and cancer, among other conditions.

Some consumers of CBD have reported that it helped them with insomnia, chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, and addiction.

There has been little research so far on the effects of long-term CBD consumption, but in the short term, its side effects can include dry mouth, drowsiness and fatigue, mood changes, and irritability. These may not affect everyone who takes it.

CBN (Cannabinol)

CBN is produced when old THC in the cannabis plant breaks down. It loses around 75% of its psychoactive potency during this process. This makes it effectively non-psychoactive unless taken in very large doses.

CBN is nowhere near as popular or widely understood as CBD, but can be found in oils, tinctures, and even tea bags. CBN capsules for sleep are popular, as the chemical is mildly sedative. Some animal research suggests that it might be useful for relieving pain in the muscles and joints, although this effect was stronger when it was combined with CBD.

As for the risks of CBN, too little research has been done so far to know.

It is best to talk to a doctor if you plan on taking either CBD or CBN. You should also not exceed the recommended dosage.
